The use of ultrafiltration and nanofiltration in liquid radioactive waste processing

The project "The use of ultrafiltration and nanofiltration in liquid radioactive waste processing" under acronym ULNARAW is solved with the financial support of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic within the Theta program in the years 2022 - 2024.

The aim of the project is to design a technological solution for the treatment of liquid radioactive waste, which contains radionuclides, borates and detergents (laundry water). The project will design and verify a workflow for the treatment of liquid radioactive waste using ultrafiltration or nanofiltration. Membrane technologies enable the reduction of the volume of liquid radioactive waste, suitable for disposal. The project will contribute to reducing the environmental burden and minimizing radioactive waste. The resulting technology will be tested and validated on model and real wastewater.

Currently, a system of evaporators and high-efficiency evaporators (UGU) or various types of sorption using ion exchangers are used for the treatment of radioactive wastewater. Some types of waters contain a certain concentration of detergents which cause disability to use only sorption processes.

The consortium consists of Research Center Řež, s.r.o., ÚJV Řež, a. s., ASIO TECH, spol. s.r.o., NUVIA a.s. and UCT Prague.

The benefit of the project is the reduction of the amount of radioactive waste, reduction of energy consumption of processing and achieving the minimum radiation burden of the operational workforce. The advantage is the possibility of integrating the technology into existing or newly built nuclear power plants. The project represents a novel and in Czech Republic not yet applied technology, which has the potential for the future due to the rising trend of energy use from the nuclear power plant.
